A nation can honor its veterans in many forms. For example: fly an American flag, wear a red poppy, or observe a ceremonial moment of silence and reflection. A Quilt of Valor (QOV) is a Civilian Award for the individual’s service and sacrifice to defend our county’s freedoms. Volunteers create these handmade patriotic-themed quilts as tangible expressions of gratitude from a grateful nation. A QOV is a one-time, life-time award to a living service member or veteran.

Rita White Gum, a Quilt Of Valor seamstress, honored two local Vietnam veterans on Friday, July 19, during the PBHS Class of 1970 Surf’s Up II Event at the Medallion Restaurant. U.S. Air Force veteran Edgar Brown and Navy veteran Paul Foy, both 1969 graduates of Philip Barbour High School, were awarded a Quilt of Valor. Their spouses, Doretta McDaniels Brown, and Vicki Cross Foy, as well as Rita White Gum are all 1970 PBHS graduates.

Over 373,394 quilts have been awarded to active-duty military members and veterans from all American conflicts as of December 2023. Visit the Quilts of Valor Foundation for more information on the nomination process by friends or family and documentation of service at https://dev.qovf.org/.
