Veterans Day Weekend Observed In The County

By Marija Ilic

Absolutely wonderful weather has descended on Barbour County during the Veterans Day weekend, allowing for wide range of activities planned to be well attended. From one to the other end of the county, residents and organizations have acknowledged and celebrated local veterans in unique ways.

On Saturday, the day started with 5K Ruck and Run race at Battlers Knob, while Boys Scouts gathered at the Veterans Park and worked on refurbishing and painting the area. Battlers Knob continued the day with free lunch, served by Junior Lions Club and activities provided by Dennis Riccio, concluding the full slate of events with presentation of Quilts of Valor.

The same evening, American Legion Post 44 and Peoples Bank sponsored the free spaghetti dinner for local veterans at the Medallion Restaurant on Main Street in Philippi. More than 70 people – veterans and their families – attended, and shared stories, while enjoying the meal. The ranges of veterans were from Korean War to Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

On Monday, Union Community building unveiled their Wall of Veterans, with over 103 being displayed, and on the other side of the county, traditional Veterans Day parade took place in downtown Belington.

Barbour County has been a home to more than thousand veterans, and this past weekend, the community stepped up and honored them well.
