Unrelenting Winter Weather Grips Barbour County: A Week Of Sleet, Snow, And Power Outages

In a week that can only be described as a winter onslaught, Barbour County faced a relentless barrage of harsh weather conditions, starting with sleet and slush on Tuesday and culminating in a heavy snowfall on Monday night.

The troubles began last Tuesday as the county found itself in the grip of sleet and slush, creating hazardous conditions for commuters and pedestrians alike. The situation escalated as the week progressed, with high winds wreaking havoc on Friday, knocking down trees and causing widespread power outages. In some areas, residents endured power disruptions that persisted through Sunday evening.

The severity of the weather was further highlighted when a power line fell on a county school bus. Despite the perilous situation, prompt and coordinated efforts by authorities ensured the safe evacuation of all children on board. The Barbour County Board of Education affirmed that every student made it home safely.

As the cold weather and snow persisted into the weekend, Barbour County experienced heavy snowfall on Monday night, resulting in several inches of accumulation. The aftermath led to the cancellation of schools and the closure of businesses on Tuesday, as residents grappled with the aftermath of the winter storm.

Looking ahead, the weather forecast indicates a slight respite from the intense precipitation, with some snow expected on Friday and the possibility of rain in the middle of next week. However, temperatures are set to plummet to single digits over the weekend before experiencing a notable swing to the mid-50s and 60s by the middle of next week.
