On Friday, January 26, the Barbour County Sheriff's Department and the Philippi Police Department joined forces to conduct a comprehensive drill at Philip Barbour High School. This collaborative effort aimed to enhance school safety measures and foster a drug-free environment within the educational institution.
The highlight of the operation was the involvement of the Northern Appalachian Regional K9 Interdiction Team, comprising K-9 units from various law enforcement agencies. The teams included members from the Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Department, Grafton Police Department, Elkins Police Department, Philippi Police Department, and the Barbour County Sheriff's Department.
The primary focus of the drill was a thorough sweep of the entire school premises by the K-9 units. The highly-trained canines and their handlers systematically searched for any potential threats or contraband that might compromise the safety and well-being of the students and staff.
This initiative was conducted in collaboration with the Barbour County School Board, emphasizing the joint commitment to creating a secure and drug-free learning environment. The drill not only served as a proactive measure but also allowed law enforcement agencies to demonstrate their dedication to ensuring the safety of students in educational institutions.

In addition to the sweeping operation, members of the K9 Interdiction Team took the opportunity to engage with students during the drill. This interaction aimed to build positive relationships between law enforcement and the student body, fostering a sense of community and mutual respect.
