Scholarship Winner Recognized And Community Members Honored

By Marija Ilic

At the Board of Education meeting on Monday, June 24, 2024, the evening commenced on a somber note as President McConnell addressed the tragic loss of Keaton McDermott. Keaton, a beloved student and athlete who had graduated less than a month ago, lost his life in a car accident earlier this week. President McConnell expressed condolences and offered prayers for Makenzie Shahan, who was also affected by the incident.

Following this heartfelt moment, the board proceeded to recognize Alyssa Moss, the recipient of the prestigious BOE Scholarship. Alyssa, who plans to pursue a major in elementary education with a minor in administration at Davis & Elkins College, was honored for her academic achievements and commitment to education. The board applauded Alyssa's dedication and wished her success in her future endeavors.

The meeting also celebrated Cadence Vincent, daughter of Superintendent Eddie Vincent, for her remarkable achievement in qualifying for the Olympic trials. Cadence is a student at the University of Alabama.

In addition to these recognitions, the board expressed gratitude to Jared Nestor for his dedicated service on the Board of Education. As his term concludes, his seat will be filled by the recently elected Martin Durst. The board acknowledged Jared's contributions and provided him with a plaque as a sign of thanks for his years of service.

During the meeting, Board Member Adam Starks raised important questions regarding facility management, specifically the purchase of an old car lot and the plan of action for ongoing work. A lively discussion ensued about the necessity and effectiveness of the Energy Manager/Facility Inspector position, which was mandated by the Regional Education Service Agency (RESA) approximately 20 years ago. The board debated whether this position remains mandated and how it has impacted the efficiency of facility management.
