PMS Students participate in Math Night

On Thursday, May 9, Philippi Middle School hosted “Math Night”, a family engagement event to promote parent involvement and support mathematical fluency. Over 60 students were in attendance with nearly 200 total participants. Visitors rotated around classrooms, each with unique themes and activities, to earn tickets they could use to win prizes at the end of the evening. Activity stations included the “grocery store” where students attempted to shop and stay within a provided budget, the “arcade” where students battled their families in math games, and the “art center” where students created their own puzzles using two dimensional geometric shapes. Other activity stations were “the bank,” “the fitness center,” “the estimation station,” and “the snack shack.”

The outing was made possible thanks to the school’s Title I program and math team. Other teachers and staff members also contributed to math night a huge success! School funds allowed each family in attendance to enjoy a meal and homemade ice cream. At the conclusion of the evening, over half of the students participating won a board game to take home and every participant left with a SAT approved calculator. Local organizations were also in attendance to promote their summer programs and family resources. PMS is thankful for the incredible turnout and is looking forward to providing more opportunities for family engagement in the upcoming school year!
