The Philippi Lions Club gathered with family and friends of Velma Allen, Mary Alice McLean, Michael White, and Jack Miller to dedicate a picnic table and bench in their honor on Friday, April 12. The picnic table is at the Veterans Park and the bench is at Myers Clinic. Lion Millard Minor spoke on behalf of the Lions Club and expressed appreciation to the American Legion, Myers Clinic, and to everyone who supported the fundraiser and/or made a donation to this project. It is the hope of the Club that these are used and enjoyed for many years to come.
Velma Allen was a member of the Philippi Lions Club for 33 years. She shared her love of Lionism with her family; at one time, her sons, Doug and Dave, and their families Barbara, Linda and Amy were all members of the club. Velma especially liked the Fun Auction at Mansfield Place and giving out candy on Halloween. Velma received the Leonard Jarrett Award and Lion of the Year.
Mary Alice McLean was a 25-year member of the Philippi Lions Club. She served as Treasurer for many years. Mary Alice was known for helping out at fundraisers, always eager to bake her delicious pepperoni rolls and other baked goods. Mary Alice was presented with the Leonard Jarret Award.
Michael White was an 11-year member of the Philippi Lions Club. He was their go-to guy for everything. Michael was exceptional at using the Spot Vision Screener and was able to hold the attention of the children all while taking their picture. Michael participated in just about every project and fundraiser that the club held. He was often seen walking through downtown Philippi putting up flyers or gathering eyeglasses to be recycled. Michael held several positions in the club, most recently as First Vice President and Recording Secretary. He was presented with the Leonard Jarret Award and the Melvin Jones Award.
Jack Miller was an 11-year member of the Philippi Lions Club. He was a faithful member who helped with the fundraisers that served the community. He enjoyed the social activities and gatherings. Jack served on the Board of Directors for several years.
