On the now deserted campus of Alderson Broaddus University, nestled on the hill above Philippi, the autumn sun bathed the rolling hills and historic buildings in its golden glow on a bittersweet Saturday afternoon, October 28. The occasion was "One Last Memory on the Mountaintop," a reunion that drew several hundred alumni, friends, families, former faculty, and staff from more than 20 different states and countries around the world. This heartfelt gathering marked the closure of their beloved institution, Alderson Broaddus University, which had been forced to shut its doors just a few months earlier, leaving a profound scar on a community that had cherished it for generations.

The spirit of AB, as it is fondly known by its community, remained strong as alumni began arriving on campus as early as Thursday, with hearts full of nostalgia and anticipation. The campus had always been a sanctuary of learning, growth, and friendship, and the chance to relive the memories was a precious gift.

As the clock neared 3 p.m. on that fateful Saturday, the gathering was filled with excitement and a tinge of sadness. The attendees assembled at a location that held special significance – the central courtyard where the heart of campus life had once thrived. Alumni mingled, shared stories, and embraced the rich tapestry of experiences that AB had woven into their lives.

The event's speakers included former presidents, esteemed professors, and members of the Board of Trustees, as well as representatives from the Coalition to Save AB. However, one of the most poignant moments was when Dr. Yount, a revered former faculty member, took the stage to read his heartfelt poem about the school. His words resonated with the crowd, echoing the profound impact the institution had on all those who had passed through its halls.

As the program continued, attendees were treated to a memorable rendition of "Country Roads" performed by former members of the renowned West Virginians music performance group, reminding everyone of their deep-rooted connection to the Mountain State. The powerful, soul-stirring performance served as a musical tribute to their shared experiences.

In a beautifully harmonious conclusion, former choir members took the stage, their voices raised in hymns that echoed across the mountaintop. It was a moving reminder of the strong bonds and shared faith that had united the AB community for generations. The crescendo came with a unison of voices, as everyone joined in singing the Alma Mater, a hauntingly beautiful tribute to the institution that had meant so much to them. The sound carried through the middle of the campus and beyond, leaving not a dry eye in the crowd.

The mixture of emotions, a blend of nostalgia, gratitude, and a tinge of sadness, pervaded the air as the sun began to dip below the horizon. The campus that had witnessed countless learning moments, friendships forged, and dreams realized was now closing its chapter. But the memories created and the bonds formed at Alderson Broaddus University would remain forever.

The "One Last Memory on the Mountaintop" was a fitting tribute to an institution that had left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of all who had passed through its gates. It was a day of remembrance, celebration, and unity, a chance for the AB community to come together one last time, under a perfect autumn sky, and cherish the memories that would forever linger in their hearts.
