North Philippi Bridge Temporarily Closed

A cloud of uncertainty looms over North Philippi as questions surrounding the closure of the bridge continue to baffle local authorities and residents.

The Barbour County Communication Center responded to queries from Barbour Buzz staff regarding the bridge closure. In an attempt to provide accurate information for emergency planning, they disclosed that they received notice that the bridge would be closed for repairs for a period of up to two weeks. When asked about the specifics of the closure, such as whether it would be a 24/7 shutdown, limited to vehicular traffic, or open to pedestrians, the Communication Center directed the inquiries to the Department of Highways (DOH).

Surprisingly, the Barbour County office of DOH was unaware of any ongoing bridge work. In an attempt to unravel the mystery, they contacted the Weston office and the Bridge Engineer, who confirmed that construction work was indeed taking place. Unfortunately, no additional details were provided, with the decision on the duration of the closure, timing, and the type of traffic allowed reportedly resting in the hands of the contractor.

Similarly, the City of Philippi was blindsided by the news, unaware of any construction activity or the associated details. It appears that decisions regarding the bridge closure were made at the state level, leaving local governments and offices in the dark.

Residents, already grappling with the inconvenience of a sudden closure, are now faced with more questions than answers. The lack of information has sparked concerns and frustration, as the community seeks clarity on the timeline, accessibility, and the overall impact of the bridge closure on their daily lives.

The Barbour Buzz team will stay on top of this story and will continue to keep the community informed as more details come to light.
