Matthew Croston Smashes State Record in Powerlifting

By Marija Ilic

Matthew Croston, a 20-year-old athlete hailing from Philippi, West Virginia, made headlines at the 2024 USA Powerlifting State Championships by breaking the state record in the 165 lb weight class.

A former track athlete for PBHS, he transitioned to powerlifting three years ago, finding inspiration and guidance in his cousin Michael Croston's home gym, with the invaluable assistance of Scottie Mayle.

Before his remarkable performance at the State Championships, Croston's talent was evident in previous competitions. He made his debut in the powerlifting arena at a competition in Virginia, hosted by the Military Institute, where he clinched second place in deadlift and third place in bench.

His achievements continued to soar as he participated in the USA Powerlifting Championships in Morgantown, where he not only secured first place in his age and weight class but also shattered the state record for deadlift. While there may have been subsequent attempts to surpass his record, Croston's dominance in his division remains undeniable, showcasing his status as a force to be reckoned with in the powerlifting community.
