Leer South Update


  • Much anticipated updated about Leer South Mine was released as Core Natural Resources (a company created from merger of Arch Coal and Consol Energy) reported their fourth quarter earnings, alongside the new information about our local mine.


  • Early in January, a fire broke out in the mine, and on January 15, the mines was sealed while they continued to work on extinguishing the fire. Since then, a team from the mine safely re-entered the mine and resumed some of the work. They have also determined that the longwall equipment has mostly remained intact - a good news for whenever they are cleared to resume with full work force.


  • It has been a long and trying winter in the community - from continuous flood warnings to winter storms. Schools are once again on 2 hour delay for Friday, but it appears that next week is bringing back upper 40s and low 50s weather.


  • Don't forget to mark your calendars for Barbour County CEOS Winter Fair that will be held this year at Battlers Knob on March 14 and 15.


  • The word is that Mackenna Halfin represented PBHS well and medaled twice at the state swim meet - finishing third in 50 yard free and fifth in 100 yard free! More updated results to come tomorrow!'


  • Mountaineer Inn is looking for front desk clerk - stop by the motel to pick up an application!


  • Youth Wrestling will have have hot dog and bake sale this Sunday, February 23, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Belington Shop N Save! They are trying to help offset the cost for 13 youth wrestlers who qualified for the state competition.


  • Save the date for March 15 for Buckwheat pancake feed at Asbury UM Church in Belington. It will be from 8 a.m. to Noon.


  • 2025 Race to Lil' Moe's - an opening race of the WV Mountain Bike Association is approaching - and it will be held on April 6!
