(Members left to right: Dana Booth, Marshall Reed, Ted Ware, Nancy-Burner Ware, DG Kermit Hawley, Jimmie Tallman, and Sue Edward.)

The Junior Lions Club, along with Philippi’s Lions Club, hosted the District Governor’s Night on Monday, October 23, 2023. District governor Kermit Hawley was the key speaker for the night. The zone chairman Millard Minor introduced Mr. Hawley. Junior Lions Club inducted a new member, Keeah Ware, and Philippi inducted Beth Long as their new member. The dinner was held at Light of Christ Chapel in Belington. Junior Lions Club would like to recognize fellow lion Pastor Jimmie Tallman for hosting the dinner at his church.

Past district governor and Junior Lions club member Marshall Reed presented President Ted Ware, and lion Dana Booth with the Melvin Jones Award. Both of these members received this prestigious award for all of their hard work and dedication with the Junior Lions Club. Other members, Nancy Burner-Ware, Jimmie Tallman, and Sue Edwards were each presented with the Leonard Jarrett award. Junior Lions Club would like to extend their appreciation to each of its members who were able to attend the dinner, as well as congratulate each member who was inducted and who were presented with awards. Junior Lions Club would also like to recognize Philippi Lions Club for helping host this event with them. Junior Lions Club would also like to give a special recognition for District Governor Kermit Hawley and his lovely wife for making the time to come and speak at this event, as well as the volunteers who helped, prepare, cook, and serve the evening’s amazing meal. This evening goes to show how much hard work and dedication each and every member has put into serving their club as well as the communities of Barbour County.

The Junior Lions Club has been very busy. They held Governor’s Night, and they also participated in the town of Junior’s annual trick or treat. They were located at the gazebo in the park. They were there to hand out candy to all of the trick or treaters. The Junior Lions Club went around to Belington Elementary School, Kasson Elementary/middle school, and Junior Elementary School to conduct their annual eye screen. This service is free to the students at school. They use a special camera that scans each child’s eye and helps scan for three different types of vision problems that could possibly occur. If a child’s scan showed anything, then a form was filled out by a member and sent home with that child. This helps parents know if their child may need a follow-up appointment with their eye doctor for further screenings. The Junior Lions Club knows how important it is to get out in the schools and help screen students. If anyone needs help with assistance in getting glasses, they can contact a member of the Junior Lions Club. The eye screenings are just one of the many activities the club is actively involved in within the community.
