Jon Villers Secure Third Place In Table Tennis Tournament

By Marija Ilic

The recent West Virginia State Table Tennis Tournament, hosted by the Charleston Table Tennis Club at the St. Albans Municipal Building, showcased fierce competition, exceptional talent, and unforgettable moments. Among the participants was former Philippi Baptist Church pastor and longtime Barbour County resident Jon Villers.

Villers emerged as a formidable contender, making waves in the under 1800 rated players singles category. In the group round-robin play, he displayed exceptional skill, tying for second place. This accomplishment propelled him into the B division, where he ultimately secured a third-place finish.

The highlight of Villers' journey was the intense battle with the second-place winner in his division. The match, known as the longest and most-watched battle of the tournament, kept spectators on the edge of their seats.

Villers shared his excitement about the competition, stating, "It was so much fun, and there was great talent from all across West Virginia. The atmosphere was electric, and every match brought its own unique challenges."

Villers also participated in the doubles category, teaming up with fellow players from the Princeton club. Unfortunately, they did not advance to the tournament bracket, but the experience was valuable for all participants.

The tournament, held over two days on February 24 and 25, attracted participants from various parts of the state, including six players from the Princeton club. Villers expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete at such a high level and praised the Charleston Table Tennis Club for organizing a well-executed event.
