Area received several more inches of snow on Thursday
  • County received several more inches of snow throughout Thursday, and what was originally 2 hour delay for schools, turned into non-traditional instruction day. As of Thursday evening, only 2 hour delay is called for Friday morning.


  • Arch Coal Leer South issued the statement that the mine will be temporarily sealed while mitigating measures are deployed to extinguish the fire that started Monday early morning. Employees were informed on Thursday that it will be several months before production is resumed. While some employees will be transferred to Taylor county and Pennsylvania sites, others were given either option of low earnings during mine closure or looking for another employment.


  • Even temporary closure of the mine will undoubtedly impact employees and their families, as well as the economy of the area that, after closure of Alderson Broaddus University, now heavily depends on two mines to provide employment to local residents.


  • Over the weekend, several events will take place - PB-Grafton boys' basketball game at Battlers Knob is still scheduled for Saturday, starting at 4 p.m. with freshmen game. On Sunday, Crim United Methodist Church will have their free monthly luncheon at noon, with everyone welcome (service is at 11 a.m.). Also on Sunday, Beth Marsh will host Paint and Sip with special drink provided. The cost is $35, and it is from 2-4 p.m. at The Image Maker shop. Please contact Beth on Facebook for reservations.


  • WVU Extension Service is selling "So Easy to Preserve" book that helps with learning how to can and preserve food. The cost is $35. Contact their office for more info.


  • Bless This Food pantry is looking for volunteers to help unload the trucks when they arrive. If you can help, call 910-800-1071.


  • With colder weather, Dairy King, Lil' Moe's, Philippi Inn, and Hometown Pizzeria are offering array of soups, so make sure you stop by and support local eateries while enjoying delicious bowl of soup!


  • Save the date for the following events:

    • January 23 - 6-8 p.m. Square dance at 17 North Event Center - $5 donation for Animal Friends accepted

    • January 25 - 1 p.m. - Peoples Chapel will feature speaker Deidra Gaines and music by Lauren Howdershelt

    • January 28 - Family Support Center in Belington will host Hot Cocoa ornament crafts
