Tragedy struck near the historic Philippi Covered Bridge on Friday, as authorities responded to a fatal shooting that claimed the life of one male individual. The incident, which unfolded around 5 p.m. near Blue and Gray Park, has left law enforcement agencies on high alert as they pursue the suspect.
According to reports from Lieutenant Dustin Cale and Chief Shane Miller of the Philippi Police Department, emergency responders rushed to the scene following a distressing call reporting shots fired and a victim lying on the ground. Eyewitnesses recounted seeing a dark blue or dark gray Toyota Tacoma, equipped with a distinctive dog box in the bed and red or orange flags, fleeing the area. The suspect has been identified as Michael Mussi, although the victim's identity remains undisclosed at this time.
Authorities have initiated a widespread search spanning Upshur, Barbour, Randolph, and Tucker counties, cautioning that Mussi is considered armed and dangerous. Despite ongoing efforts, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. The West Virginia State Police Crime Team and Medical Examiner's Office have been deployed to assist in the investigation.
Responding to the scene were Barbour County Office of Emergency Management, City of Philippi Police, City of Belington Police, Barbour County Sheriff’s Department, West Virginia State Police, and Barbour County EMS. Randolph County Sheriff’s Department also responded.
As investigations continue, residents are urged to remain vigilant, with further updates promised as soon as new information emerges.
