Community Mourns Loss Keaton McDermott

Barbour County is grappling with the sudden and heartbreaking loss of 18-year-old Keaton McDermott, a recent Philip Barbour High School graduate and beloved athlete, who was killed in a three-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon in Randolph County.

The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that McDermott, known affectionately as “Beef” to friends and family, lost his life in the accident that occurred between Valley Head and Huttonsville. According to Sheriff Rob Elbon, the crash left two vehicles with significant front-end damage. Two individuals received on-scene treatment from Randolph County EMS, while two others were transported to Davis Medical Center for further care.

“The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office would like to express our deepest sympathies to those affected by this tragedy and will continue to pray for their peace during this difficult time,” Sheriff Elbon said in a statement. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

First responders at the scene of the accident included the West Virginia State Police, Huttonsville-Mill Creek Fire Department, and Shavers Fork Fire and Rescue, among others.

McDermott, a standout athlete, had just graduated from Philip Barbour High School in May. He was a dedicated four-year player on the varsity football team and had recently competed at the West Virginia state high school track and field meet, where he excelled in regional competitions.

In response to the tragedy, members of the PBHS football team gathered at the school’s football field Sunday night to mourn together. Philip Barbour High School also opened its doors on Monday to provide support for grieving students.

On Monday afternoon, the Taj Moe Hall in Philippi became a gathering spot for those in mourning, and a public prayer vigil was held at the football field later that evening. The vigil provided an opportunity for the community to come together, offering love and support to McDermott’s family and honoring his memory.

In an effort to support the McDermott family during this time of need, Meal Train and GoFundMe accounts have been established.

The loss of Keaton McDermott has left a void in the community, but his legacy as an outstanding athlete and cherished friend will continue to be remembered by all who knew him.
