Class Of 1970 Gathers For Surf’s Up II

The PBHS Class of 1970 beat the heat at “Surf’s Up II” on Friday, July 19, from 1-3 p.m. in the Medallion Restaurant Banquet Room. Total of 28 classmates and guests attended the slice of paradise indoor beach party. The buffet included burgers and hot dogs with toppings, baked beans, three kinds of salads, and bottomless beverages. Classmates provided the jawsome Dessert Station.


Registrars Debbie Frame and Gloria Smith welcomed and ticketed guests for the door prize drawing. Mermaids Brenda Smith and Betty Lombardo prepared authentic sea treasures tablescapes. Beachcomber Gary Price honored deceased classmates with a moment of silence and gave the invocation.


Coordinator Pam Hamilton thanked the class at large for their continuing generosity. She recognized Debbie Frame, Betty Lombardo, Teresa Maxwell, Billie Sue Mitchell, Brenda Smith, and Gloria Smith for their unwavering support of class experiences. She explained the significance of the swag bags and encouraged classmates to be like taffy—sweet, long-lasting, tough, flexible, and colorful.


The class purchased two bricks for the Barbour County Veteran Flag Pole Memorial at the PBHS sports complex dedicated on Sept. 8, 2023. The brick honoring John Charnoplosky and the brick honoring other classmates who are veterans have been inscribed.


A Quilt of Valor (QOV) is a Civilian Award for the individual’s service and sacrifice to defend our county’s freedoms. QOV seamstress Rita White Gum awarded a quilt to two local Vietnam veterans. Air Force veteran Edgar Brown and Navy veteran Paul Foy are both 1969 graduates of PBHS. Rita and their spouses, Doretta McDaniels Brown, and Vicki Cross Foy, are all members of the Class of 1970.


Moondoggie Gary Schoonover discussed tentative plans for the 55-year class reunion July 18-20, 2025. Prices are subject to change. At 5 p.m. on Friday, July 18, the finger-foods picnic will be catered in Pavilion #10 at the Barbour County Fairgrounds for $18 per person. Guests are welcome. On Saturday, July 19, at 5 p.m., registration will begin in the Grand Foyer of Burbick Hall at Battlers Knob. The class photo will be taken at 6 p.m. and priced separately. The banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m. for $22 per person. On Sunday, July 20, at 8:30 a.m., the Dutch Treat Breakfast will be at the Medallion Restaurant. Wahine Debbie Frame drew names for door prizes donated by classmates. Marija Illic was recognized for her tireless efforts to provide the best value menu. The class posed for historic photos.


On Friday, Dec. 20, from 1-3 p.m., the class will return to the Medallion Banquet Room for their Ugly Christmas Sweater Event IV.
