City Gathers Community Input At First "Philippi Forward" Meeting

Updated: Oct 13, 2023

The City of Philippi kicked off its ambitious "Philippi Forward" initiative with the first in a series of four community meetings, held on October 2 at City Hall. This initiative comes in the wake of the closure of Alderson Broaddus University, which has prompted city officials to seek valuable input from the local community as they embark on crafting a new strategic plan for the city's future.

With more than 20 community members in attendance, the event proved to be a successful starting point for engaging citizens in shaping the future of Philippi. City Manager Jeremy Drennen, who spearheaded the meeting, emphasized the importance of community involvement in this critical juncture.

"The goal of 'Philippi Forward' is to create a shared vision for our city's future and to ensure that the residents' voices are at the center of our planning process," stated Drennen. "Our community is the heartbeat of Philippi, and it's crucial that we work together to revitalize and strengthen our city."

During the meeting, the focus was squarely on gathering input on how to support the local community and businesses. Attendees passionately shared a variety of ideas and suggestions that ranged from bolstering advertising efforts to harnessing the potential of the Tygart River to attract tourism. There was also enthusiasm for the concept of organizing block parties to foster a sense of community and camaraderie.

One key issue raised by attendees was the need to update the City of Philippi website, making it a more accessible and informative platform for residents. Additionally, there was a collective desire to establish better means of communication with the community that extend beyond social media platforms, recognizing that not everyone follows these channels.

City officials also sought input on how to enhance the attendance at events like the summer concert series. Attendees were encouraged to share their thoughts on the quality of life in the city, providing valuable insights for future improvements.

The next "Philippi Forward" meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 11, at 6 p.m., once again at City Hall. Residents are urged to participate and bring their ideas, suggestions, and aspirations for the future of Philippi. These community meetings represent an essential step in charting a path forward for the city, ensuring it remains vibrant and responsive to the needs of its residents.

As Philippi embarks on this journey of revitalization and community engagement, it is clear that the voices of its citizens will play a pivotal role in shaping the city's future. "Philippi Forward" promises to be a collaborative endeavor that captures the spirit and potential of this tight-knit community, and its success will be determined by the active participation of its residents.
