Golden Books have expanded from fairy tales! Willie Nelson: A Little Golden Book Biography is one of the latest in a new series that focuses on the lives of historical figures. Little Golden Books are designed to be good for reading to a child cuddled in a lap or a young reader making the transition to independent reading. I had many Little Golden Books read to me as a child and still keep some in my library. I had never read a Little Golden Book biography before, but it maintained all the charm of the Golden Books of my childhood.

“Willie Nelson” is a fun read both for his fans and those unfamiliar with Willie Nelson’s life and career. Willie started writing poetry at the age of eleven. Getting his first guitar opened a whole new world for him as he realized his poems were actually songs. In his 20’s, he moved to Nashville to follow his dreams, but found the Nashville country music establishment was not for him. Willie realized he would have to find his own path. His rebellion against the Nashville country music industry will resonate with children and adults alike. Willie returned to his home state of Texas, and found others making their own path. Despite his successes, he maintained interest in his farming roots. He started the Farmer’s Aid concerts which still help farmers today. Children or adults trying to write their own music or poetry will find this book inspiring. The themes of working for success, remembering your roots, and being a caring person are all teachable moments.

Adults will be surprised how enjoyable a Little Golden Book can still be, while the playful illustrations of Jeffery Ebbeler with Geof Smith’s simple, straightforward writing are sure to keep young readers engaged.
