On Saturday, November 9, Battlers Knob in Philippi held several events in honor of and as a salute to the veterans of Barbour County.
Early in the morning, a 5K Race was held. Thereafter, a Field of Flags Ceremony was held with the green space at Battlers Knob, decorated by 1,011 American flags to symbolize the 1,011 veterans that call Barbour County home. This ceremony included a performance by the Belington Elementary Chorus and featured Guest of Honor, Mac Warner, WV Secretary of State. It culminated with those in attendance placing the last 100 American Flags around the grounds. Delegate Chris Phillips purchased the American Flags used in this patriotic ceremony.
Later in the afternoon, Battlers Knob hosted the WV Quilts of Valor Foundation as it presented 22 area combat veterans with unique Americana inspired quilts in appreciation for their combat related service. In this moving presentation, these veterans were cloaked by a Quilts of Valor representative and Cherri Sturm, Battlers Knob Property Manager.
The events of the day were organized by Lisa Weese of Battlers Knob. Throughout the day, the Junior Lions Club provided hot dog dinners to all who were present, courtesy of the Phillips Family Foundation. Many area veterans, their families, and local citizens attended these various events to show their respect for Barbour County veterans. Battlers Knob is honored and proud to have hosted this full day Salute to Veterans in appreciation of our area veterans for their service.
